Dear SBCSS Team,

As shared by Gov. Newsom on May 7, California has entered Stage 2 of the Resilience Roadmap with some lower-risk businesses gradually opening their doors. At this time, there are no changes to our current essential workforce and telecommuting environment, including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when present at SBCSS work sites. All employees are still required to wear masks or face coverings. We continue to thrive and get the work done, and found fun new ways to express our gratitude during Teacher Appreciation week.

Superintendent’s Message
“Our offices, in coordination with local authorities, are hopeful we will be able to move forward in a responsible and healthy manner for everyone.” View this week’s message.

We encourage employees to access available resources to help them through the COVID-19 crisis. The latest Health Advocate newsletter has information and webinars to help you navigate financial stability, working from home and mindfulness.

Innovation and Engagement
SBConnect hosted live industry chats that helped students learn the difference between empathy and sympathy, along with the opportunities and challenges of leading through disruption. Seventy students from San Bernardino County competed at the virtual California History Day event. Any winners will be announced this week and eligible to compete at the national level. Healthy SBCSS is offering webinars for staff and community partners. A workshop on “The Vaping Phenomenon” will be held May 18.

Office of the Superintendent
County Superintendent Alejandre handed out medallions to AVID coaches at a drive-through distribution event. The coaches will distribute to AVID students. The superintendent continues to coordinate with local health officials on best practices to ensure the health and safety of students, families and staff. Communications has been producing interviews and podcasts on a variety of topics in education and technology, particularly in dealing with COVID-19 and the transition to distance learning.

Student Services
Student Services continues its excellent distance learning services to all special and alternative education students. Teachers are exploring virtual learning environments and how to engage students of all ages. Brandi Palasek went from SBCSS student teacher to a full-time special education teacher at Marshall Elementary School in San Bernardino. She personally delivered colorful supply bags to her students. Parents and students have responded positively to her engaging virtual instruction and extra efforts to provide worksheets and learning tools.

Technology Services
Technical Services and ESS hosted a student advisory panel session to provide county students with a virtual platform to share their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Digital Learning Services has been consulting with districts to refine and expand its distance learning programs. EdTech Coaches Network meetings are being held in partnership with the Riverside County Office of Education to help districts adapt to the demands of distance learning.
